 George Murray was probably born in Scotland, although his place and date of birth remain unknown to us. * The 5' 11 (11st 7lbs) forward signed for Donald Turner's Thistle on Tuesday, 11th November, 1930, having most recently been with Dunipace. He made his debut appearance on Tuesday, 3rd May, 1932, in a 2-1 defeat at home to Celtic in the Glasgow Charity Cup. That night, George joined our scoring debutants club. He played his last game for the club on Saturday, 11th March, 1933, in a 2-0 defeat away to Ayr United in the SFL First Division, having appeared as a Jag on 4 occasions. His club-list included Doune Castle, Camelon, Dunipace and Partick Thistle. We don't know where or when George died. *

 An inside left, George was playing with his hometown team, Doune Castle, as the decade turned into 1930s. He tried for both Camelon Juniors and Dunipace in April 1930, and signed with the latter. The Falkirk Herald (29/10/1930) reported that “Murray, the lanky inside left of Dunipace is proving quite a find for the old champions. His equalising goal on Saturday was worth going a long way to see. East Stirlingshire were anxious to secure his services at Clydebank, but Dunipace were unable to oblige.” Senior interest (Alloa Athletic, Morton, Everton, Falkirk & St Mirren) was indeed booming at the time but it was Partick Thistle who secured his signature in mid-November 1930, allowing him to play a few more final games with Dunipace, before he made his debut with the Thistle Reserves in mid-December. There was a rumour in October 1931 that Bradford City were interested, but nothing came of it. After waiting patiently for around 18 months, George finally got his big chance in a midweek Glasgow Charity Cup tie against Celtic on 3rd May 1932. 14,000 were at Firhill to see a close game. He'd have been delighted to score on his debut but, alas, it only served as a last-minute consolation; Partick Thistle 1 Celtic 2. It was 9 months before George got another nod, and he played in 3 successive league games, beginning with a 3-2 win away to Morton on 25th February 1933. George was the son of Superintendent George Murray of the Glasgow Police, and he was said to be engaged in business in Doune with an aunt, which explained why he was outwith his roots as a “Glasgow North West” boy. He revealed to the Dundee Weekly News (15/11/1930) that he was keen to follow in his father's profession and that, until he enters the police ranks, it was intention to play professional football. This probably explains why his footballing career seems to have petered out post-Thistle, where he played in the reserves until calling it quits in the summer of 1933. |
