You Couldn't Make It Up!

by Jack Little

Chic Charnley was a player that was never far away from controversy and he had his share of bookings and red cards. A bizarre "sending off" took place during a pre-season friendly match against Cliftonville in Belfast on 13 August 1990. The referee noticed his socks were down round his ankles and that he was in breach of the recently introduced FIFA regulation about players having to wear shin guards. He was sent from the field to find a pair and took 5 minutes to get back on to (literally) pull his socks up.
