In May 1965 the" Evening Times" reported that in an effort to boost dwindling crowds for the 1964/65 Summer Cup, Thistle noticed that Brian Clough had been released by Sunderland. Thinking he might be interested in guesting for Thistle, Manager Thornton made inquiries but unfortunately the internationalist was not fully fit and nothing came of the approach.
