You Couldn't Make It Up!

by Jack Little

Thistle struggled against 2nd Division Ayr at Somerset Park on 6/2/1965 in the Scottish Cup. Ayr's equaliser came from the penalty spot approaching half-time. Normally penalties are awarded as a result of infringements committed in the penalty area as play is going on - but not this one. Keeper Jim Gray cleared up an Ayr attack and sent the ball up field. He then clashed with an Ayr forward and the referee stopped play and brought the game back to the other end of the park to award a penalty. Perhaps he benefited from the eyes in the back of his head? [Thistle won the replay 7-1.]
