You Couldn't Make It Up!

by Jack Little

Thistle's opening league match of the season on 19/8/1959 was a 2-0 win at home against Arbroath but it couldn't have been much of a spectacle for the 8,000 crowd. There were 26 off-side decisions and 22 other free-kicks in the 90 minutes - roughly 1 every 2 minutes. With numerous throw-ins for good measure, little wonder the "Glasgow Herald" described it as "pathetic poverty of football" and an "off-side orgy".
