You Couldn't Make It Up!

by Jack Little

As was the custom in those days, the Glasgow Cup was presented to Thistle on the park following their 3-2 win over Celtic at Hampden on 26/3/1951. Celtic were aggrieved at a decision by the referee to award Thistle a penalty yet there were handshakes all round as the Celtic players congratulated the winners. One player was missing however. Charlie Tully walked off in a sulk and, at one point, encouraged a team mate to do the same. At a time when sportsmanship was held in high regard, the "Glasgow Herald" commented on his behaviour and the resulting loss of prestige of his club.
