You Couldn't Make It Up!

by Jack Little

Play to the whistle! The "Sunday Post" reported that while playing against Motherwell at Firhill in a final League Cup section fixture on 2/9/1950, Jimmy Walker declined a simple tap-in thinking he was off-side. He left the ball, turned and walked away at which point the Motherwell keeper strolled out, picked up the ball and cleared it. Jimmy was the only player not to notice the ref was signalling "play on". Motherwell won 3-2 - but a 3-3 draw would have seen Hearts (Jimmy's old club) and not Motherwell qualify for the quarter-final.
