You Couldn't Make It Up!

by Jack Little

Hard to believe by modern standards but as attendances soared after WW2, in September 1948 Thistle played consecutive games at Firhill in front of 70,000 people - 35,000 each time. Rangers and Celtic on successive Saturdays? No. Queen of the South and East Fife in the League Cup. 9-0 against QOS probably boosted the attendance against newly-promoted East Fife but Thistle played with 10 men for just under an hour and lost 5-2, having been drawing 2-2 with 9 minutes to go.
