You Couldn't Make It Up!

by Jack Little

Long before scoring direct from a kick-off was permitted, Willie Sharp's goal v Queen of the South at Firhill on 20/12/1947 was an achievement that stood for decades. History records he scored in 7 seconds - but that may be doing him an injustice. The "Scotsman" timed the goal as being "within five seconds". The "Sunday Post" estimated "inside five seconds". For the record…"Mathie kicked off to Chisholm who flicked back to Brown. The half-back sent a long swinging pass through the middle. Mathie raced in, drew the visitors' defence and let the ball run to Sharp. In went a low shot - away from Wilson (the keeper) all the time".
