You Couldn't Make It Up!

by Jack Little

Q. Why did Thistle's Scottish Cup tie v Dundee Utd on 7/2/1947 go to extra time rather than a replay? A. Emergency arrangements to "play to a finish" were introduced at the end of WW2 to avoid midweek fixtures and league fixture pile-ups. Disruption to industrial output and absenteeism had to be avoided at all costs. Without floodlights, replays would have to have been played in the afternoons. Just as well perhaps. Thistle had trouble disposing of lowly Div 2 side United 4-3 and it took a goal by Walker in 109 minutes to see them through.
