You Couldn't Make It Up!

by Jack Little

The "Dumfries & Galloway Standard" reported that at the reserve match between Kilmarnock and Thistle at Rugby Park on 27/10/1945, Robert McFarlane the Thistle keeper was adjudged by the referee to have moved too soon at a penalty kick 6 times and that he saved the 7th attempt. On the basis that the referee would surely have ignored the keeper moving too soon if the kick was (say) fired wide it has to be assumed he "saved" all 6 attempts.
