You Couldn't Make It Up!

The "Daily Record" reported on 26/8/1940 that Austin Collier had a fine game at half-back in a 1-0 win over Albion Rovers. They suggested that the cheers for him at the end might well have been louder had it been known that only hours before the game he had been on manoeuvres and had slept the night in a field. A York City player, Collier was in the Army and had actually approached manager Donald Turner for a game.
