You Couldn't Make It Up!

by Jack Little

Soon after the outbreak of WW2 Thistle found themselves at the bottom of the recently created Regional League (West). The "Dundee Evening Telegraph" reported on 9/12/1939 that, discussing the fixture v Celtic at Firhill, the Directors were astonished to discover Peter McKennan knocking at the door asking to play. He was on a week's leave from the Army. They had no hesitation in selecting him and, in his only appearance for Thistle that season, he scored once in a 4-2 win.
