You Couldn't Make It Up!

by Jack Little

Defeat to a 2nd Division team at home in the 3rd round of the Scottish Cup on 5/3/1938 (1-2 to Raith Rovers) was bad enough but both teams were fined £1 (around £70 today) by the SFA for starting the game late (3.10). Neither the "Glasgow Herald" nor the "Scotsman" reported why this had happened but the referee was censured for "failing to carry out instructions with regard to the time of the kick-off". A bit harsh. He could hardly have started the match without them!
