You Couldn't Make It Up!

by Jack Little

When Thistle played Celtic in a Scottish Cup replay on 13/2/1935, the attendance was given as 39,644. The "Glasgow Herald" reported that hundreds of spectators climbed over the boundary fences and lined the pitch to avoid the crush. An estimated 15,000 could not get in to see the match and a number of them climbed up on to the roof of tenements in Northpark Street overlooking the park. Police were called but some escaped to an adjoining roof but the following day 10 appeared in court charged with Breach of the Peace. Some of them had walked on the lathes and brought down parts of the ceilings in the top flats and broken two skylights. All 10 were fined £1 (around £70 today) or 10 days in prison. One man admitted it had been an expensive adventure because he had lost his job as a result. Celtic won 3-1 but the press report did not record who the men supported.
