You Couldn't Make It Up!

by Jack Little

It is recorded in the PTFC Official History that Thistle first appeared in red and yellow hoops on 19/1/1935 (against Hearts at Tynecastle). This is not mentioned in the match reports in the "Scotsman", the "Glasgow Herald" nor the "Sunday Post" however the report in the "Edinburgh Evening News" certainly mentions Thistle's new colour scheme in some detail. There is a reference to Thistle's strip in the "Glasgow Herald" report of the match against Rangers on 1/9/1934, ie, "Thistle's rig-out was the brightest feature of this game". The report doesn't say what the colours were but it's just possible this was the earliest sighting. In the "Dundee Courier's" report of the match against St Johnstone in Perth on 17/9/1934, two accompanying photos (admittedly in black and white) show Thistle players in what may well be red and yellow hoops. This compiler, for one, is convinced! If it could be proved it would mean their first appearance predates the recorded change from navy blue by 4 months.
