You Couldn't Make It Up!

by Jack Little

In their report of the Dalbeatie Star v Thistle Scottish Cup tie on 18/1/1930, the "Dumfries and Galloway Standard and Advertiser" reported that Dennis O'Hare (Thistle's right-back) had "slept in" and missed his train. It claimed (treat with caution) that he had to take a taxi from Renton where he lived to Dumfries (at least 112 miles then) to catch a train to Dalbeatie (13 miles). He played in a 6-1 win so his train must have been on time.
