You Couldn't Make It Up!

by Jack Little

Difficult to believe in the modern era given Thistle's modest history, but when their international half-back Jimmy Gibson was transferred to Aston Villa at the end of April 1927, the reported fee of £7,500 (around £475,000 today) was reported in the "Glasgow Herald" as "believed to be the highest price ever paid for a player". The "Coventry Evening Telegraph" said it was "the highest authenticated transfer fee ever paid in football". Manchester City and Newcastle United were said to have been after Gibson as well. The fee went a long way to help pay for the main stand that was under construction at the time.
