The "Sunday Post" ran a story on 13/5/1923 on how Thistle managed to secure the signature of outside-right Davie Ness from Nithsdale Wanderers. He made 432 appearances for Thistle and scored 97 goals. A representative of the club went down to his house in Dumfriesshire only to find he was out at work. Undaunted, the Thistle man caught up with him at his work, did the business and signed him there and then at which point Ness invited him back to his house for tea. When they arrived they discovered Willie Maley the Celtic Manager waiting for him. He got his tea, but no signature.
