You Couldn't Make It Up!

by Jack Little

On 26/6/1922 "Athletic News" ran a critical piece on the cynical use of "Sports Days" by Scottish football clubs to make money under the guise of sponsoring Scottish athletics. These were very popular during the close season. 10,000 attended the most recent one at Firhill but that was below average because of the poor weather. They claimed that the total prize money for 5 handicap races came to a mere £45 yet Thistle had recouped half of that on entry fees. The winners of the 5-a-side football competition (Rangers) and runners-up (Thistle) shared £50. They suggested that "affluent clubs like Partick Thistle" should be more serious in their support for the sport of athletics.
