You Couldn't Make It Up!

by Jack Little

On 9/10/1920, Thistle "A" (reserves) arrived at Arbroath for their Alliance League game 2 men short. Ex-St Johnstone wing-half Craig was prevailed upon to turn out and Robertson the assistant trainer played at outside-right in a 3-2 defeat. The "Arbroath Herald" admonished local supporters that they "should not cheek up to visiting linesman. It gives our town a bad name". The scribe reckoned that if Salisbury "had the head of a McMenemy he would be great". He was described as "roaming about and chattering all the game. He must learn to hold his tongue on the field and then perhaps he might regain his place in the first eleven".
