You Couldn't Make It Up!

by Jack Little

The "Dumfries and Galloway Standard" reported on 10/1/1914 that "a deputation" met with non-league Nithsdale Wanderers officials in Sanquhar the previous evening with a view to negotiating a deal to switch their forthcoming Scottish Cup tie to Firhill. Nithsdale agreed and their "price" was £100 plus another £40 if the takings on the day exceeded £200. A friendly in Sanquhar was also agreed. (It was a 1-1 draw played on 4/4.) Probably just as well the venue was switched. Thistle scraped a 1-0 win.
