You Couldn't Make It Up!

by Jack Little

Alf Common has a place in football history. When he transferred from Sunderland to Middlesbrough in 2/1905 he broke the world record in being the first footballer to be transferred for £1,000. In 9/1910 he moved to Woolwich Arsenal and the "Cricket and Football Field" reported the transfer adding that "Partick Thistle had hoped to capture him". A source close to him confirmed that Arsenal and Thistle were, indeed, interested in signing him. They may well have been but he didn't venture north of the border.
