You Couldn't Make It Up!

by Jack Little

It's often said that the demise of small clubs/the financial dominance of the Old Firm was greatly accelerated by the decision (in the 1970s?) to allow home teams to keep the entire gate money in league matches.  The "Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald" reported on 3/6/1910 that Thistle intended to propose this at the League AGM that month. The scribe felt it had no chance of being adopted because provincial clubs "depend a great deal on big city gates".
