You Couldn't Make It Up!

by Jack Little

On 23/4/1906 Thistle beat Third Lanark 1-0 at Cathkin in a Glasgow Football League fixture. Manager George Easton was so impressed by his trialist goalkeeper that he assured him that his signing would be a formality and he was asked to wait after the match to complete the paperwork. 9 years later, on 3/4/1915, the "Dundee People's Journal" began a series of "my story" articles by the keeper in question. The player recalled how he overheard a heated conversation during which a Thistle director objected to him being signed, despite the arguments put forward that he was an excellent prospect from the Juniors. Manager Easton had to apologise to the player but assured him the matter would soon be settled. The player however recalled that he was resolved that night never to sign for Thistle, and he never did. The rest is history. His name was Jimmy Brownlie. He signed for Third Lanark a few weeks later, played almost 380 games for them and won 16 Scotland and 14 Scottish League Caps. One that got away!
