You Couldn't Make It Up!

by Jack Little

On 30/12/1905 Thistle's 2nd XI travelled by train to Berwick to play the local Rangers in a friendly. The train did not stop at Berwick but a system of "slip carriages" was used in those days whereby coaches were uncoupled approaching a station and the guard brought them to a halt to let passengers off. Unfortunately 4 of the Thistle squad weren't in the slip carriages and travelled on. Local players were found and pressed into service until the 4 players arrived back in Berwick. Thistle won 3-1.
