You Couldn't Make It Up!

by Jack Little

When does a match start as a league match and finish as a friendly? On 24/2/1900 Thistle were due to play Hamilton Accies away. The pitch was a disgrace and Thistle protested. The referee was not entirely persuaded and initially dismissed Thistle's protests. The game duly started and Hamilton led 3-0 at half-time. The pitch "a ploughed field" ("Coatbridge Express") deteriorated (more Thistle protests) and the referee changed his mind and declared the match a friendly. Morton were furious at the decision because loss of 2 points for Thistle would have put them on top of the league. They protested, but to no avail. Thistle lost 5-4. When the match was eventually played (on the last day of the league season) they won 4-2 winning the league by one point from - you've guessed it - Morton.
