You Couldn't Make It Up!

by Jack Little

Season 1898/99 started in disastrous fashion with 9 straight defeats (F-7, A-35). In the middle of that run (St Bernard's 0-3) the "Football Post" (Nottingham) commented on Thistle's poor form and quoted 2 fans overheard thus:- "Are ye no glad yer no on the kommitee?" and "They'll niver get anither tanner oot o' me". A third fan was heard to announce his intention to sell his season ticket. History doesn't recall how many of them were back paying their tanners the following week (Clyde 1-3). [younger readers note: a tanner = sixpence = 1 fortieth of a £]
