You Couldn't Make It Up!

by Jack Little

The "Glasgow Herald" reported that during the Thistle v Clyde game on 8/10/1898 two spectators showing admirable faith in their respective teams laid a bet of 5/- on the winner. A third man offered to hold the stakes. Under a pretext he left with the 10/- but the two fans traced him to a dance hall and took him to the police. He was admonished at Partick Police Court - but had to pay the 10/- (about £60 at current prices).
