You Couldn't Make It Up!

by Jack Little

The "Irish News and Belfast Morning News" on 4/1/1897 highlighted the plight of small clubs travelling long distances for matches. On 24/10/1896 Thistle met Newton Stewart Athletic in the Scottish Qualifying Cup. Newton Stewart left for Glasgow at 5am and on reaching Glasgow "the team had a substantial repast of a penny bun each. Partick Thistle had thus to play a half-sleepy, half-fed team". Thistle had guaranteed them £25 and after expenses they returned south with £15-£16 profit so perhaps it eased the pain of a 9-2 defeat.
