You Couldn't Make It Up!

by Jack Little

When Airdrie rattled in their 6th goal without reply 15 minutes from time on 16/11/1895, it was too much for the Thistle supporters. The referee had to be protected by the players when the pitch was invaded. The match was abandoned but the points were awarded to Airdrie. The "Dundee Courier" was scathing about their behaviour…"Deprived of witnessing their fitba' team cleaning the ground with the Airdrie men, in a vengeful mood, the loyal supporters of the Inchview team sought to have their money's worth in referee slaying, but fortunately that man escaped with his skin whole". "Disgraceful" ("Falkirk Herald").
