On 6/2/1891 the "Greenock Telegraph's" advert for the Port Glasgow v Thistle match the following day promised spectators that the half-time and full-time scores from the Scottish Cup Final at Hampden would be telegraphed to the ground and announced to the crowd. Have some sympathy for Victorian football reporters. One can feel the pain of the scribe for the "Scottish Referee" at this match which was played in a freezing gale. After some deliberation between the players and officials, only 2 x 20 minutes were played. He wrote "…we doubt if it was worth risking influenza and rheumatism to implement a fixture. Spectators and reporters were still worse off for there was no running about to keep themselves warm". "…so important a club as the Thistle should have provided accommodation for them (the press]. To sit in the open on a cold dry day is bad enough but when the temperature is at zero and the wind is discovering weak spots in your ulster and the rain is dripping from your hat and trickling from the point of your nose on to your copy, matters become twenty times worse. At other clubs where there is no press box, the pavilion is so situated that the game can be seen from the windows but at Inchview this is not possible. …Partick Thistle please note".
