You Couldn't Make It Up!

by Jack Little

There was a lively start to the Third Lanark v Thistle match at Cathkin on 6/10/1888. Both teams made chances then Paul scored with a fine shot. Thirds defended well against the Thistle pressure and it remained 1-0 at h-t. McBride doubled the lead but Thirds pulled a goal back and then had the best of things. They thought they had equalised but the goal was disputed - the Thistle players insisted the shot had gone over the bar. The referee dismissed the appeal after a long delay and the ball was centred. Arguments broke out and some Thistle players walked off but others seemed content to carry on. (Some supporters encouraged them to do so.) The referee abandoned the game. Fights threatened to break out amongst the crowd as they gathered in front of the pavilion but wiser counsel prevailed and nothing more serious than cheers and counter-cheers occurred. The "Glasgow Herald" reported…"But for their childish display of temper they (Thistle) would have won a game which would have been much to their credit as exponents of football" .
