You Couldn't Make It Up!

by Jack Little

On 14/10/1886 the "Greenock Telegraph" reported that Thistle who trailed 3-0 to Morton at h-t on the previous Saturday had had a goal disallowed in the first half. The referee and the other linesman being in no position to judge the merits of Morton's appeal that the goal should not stand had to rely on the other linesman - from Morton FC. The same report mentioned that a Morton player not playing in the match had a homing pigeon in a "paper poke" with air holes which he duly released at h-t presumably to let the paper back in Greenock know the score - at which point "someone sighed and said 'there goes the Morton's only fowl'".
