You Couldn't Make It Up!

by Jack Little

Thistle lost 3-2 away to Third Lanark in the Scottish Cup on 13/9/1884. A subsequent protest by Thistle that the pitch had been marked out with lines rather than the usual flags and that there had been crowd encroachment was dismissed by the SFA. In any case, the referee had added on additional time for the crowd trouble. Thistle's 10/- deposit was returned however because the SFA hadn't considered the protest frivolous. What was more damming however was that it later came to light that the SFA secretary had known at the time of the protest that none of Third Lanark's players had been registered. He hadn't commented on that since it was not part of Thistle's protest. Had they done so their protest would have been upheld.
