You Couldn't Make It Up!

by Jack Little

Thistle had no game on 8/3/1884 because Vale of Leven refused to fulfil their friendly fixture. This was retaliation because a representative of Thistle (a Mr Halley) representing the Glasgow FA had voted against Vale being allowed a second chance to turn out against Queen's Park in the Scottish Cup final. (The cup had been awarded to Queen's Park on a "walkover" because Vale had been unable to get a team together for the final.) The scribe in the "Athletic News" said " I have always had a very high opinion of the Vale of Leven but if they treat any other club as they have treated Partick Thistle I shall be forced to alter my opinion. This is putting the screw on with a vengeance".
