On 21/4/1883 in a comment about Rangers ("one of the leading clubs in the Scottish Association") v Partick Thistle ("a junior club"), "Bell's Life in London and Sporting Chronicle" reported that the Rangers keeper (Gillespie) was guilty of "gross carelessness" because he was seen chatting to a friend near the goal when Thistle scored (they won 2-0). He was said to have played with his coat on.
