You Couldn't Make It Up!

by Jack Little

In July 1875 every member of the Partick Thistle Flute Band appeared in court charged with breach of the peace following disturbances on their way back from a Sunday School trip. Their playing Scottish (not "party") tunes had attracted large crowds leading to disturbances in the Burgh and "even up to Great Western Road". ("North British Daily Mail" 9/7/1875.) [Since this took place 7 months before Thistle's first recorded fixture it is not entirely clear what connection, if any, the band had with the club. It may just be coincidental.]
