 Willie O'Donnell was born on Saturday, 9th August, 1924, in Clydebank, West Dunbartonshire. The 5' 6 (10st 0lbs) forward signed for Donald Turner's Thistle on Monday, 23rd April, 1945, having most recently been with Yoker Athletic. Aged 21, he made his debut appearance on Saturday, 18th August, 1945, in a 3-1 defeat at home to Heart of Midlothian in the Southern League. Willie scored his first two goals for Thistle on Saturday, 20th October, 1945, in a 6-2 win at home to Third Lanark in the Southern League. He scored the last of his 73 goals on Saturday, 9th December, 1950, in a 2-1 win away to Airdrieonians in the SFL First Division. He played his last game for the club on Saturday, 28th April, 1951, in a 1-1 draw at home to Dundee in the SFL First Division, having clocked up 144 appearances as a Jag. His club-list included Yoker Athletic, Partick Thistle, Northampton Town, Shrewsbury Town and Burton Albion. Willie died on Sunday, 20th August, 1989, in Glasgow, aged 65. |
