Young left winger who signed early in 1941 from Wishaw. Was a fringe player of the first team, but managed almost 20 appearances in his 2½ stint with the club. Played with Polkemmet whilst still registered on the books at Firhill. A big highlight for Willie was undoubtedly the 4-2 Southern League Cup win at Celtic Park in March 1941; his first minute goal set the winning tone. He transferred to Airdrie during 1942-43 and was with Albion Rovers from March 1944 onwards. Showed some good form latterly at Cliftonhill and won a big move to Preston North End in December 1947. Again, he was on the fringes of the first team though, and had to settle on just 15 League appearances in just over 3 years at Deepdale. Moved to Barrow of Division 3 North in February 1951 where he became much more regular as a first team player, scoring 16 goals in 106 League appearances before retiring in 1954. |
