![]() Walter arrived from Partick Virginia, a local junior outfit, in February 1892. He was initially drafted in to bolster the Swifts, and got his chance in the first team some six months later. He could play anywhere along the half-back line and was occasionally deployed as an attacker as and when required. This was the case when he scored his one and only goal for the club, a 3-2 win away to Glasgow Wanderers in the Glasgow Cup. 500 were at Eglington Park on 17th September 1892 to see it. Wanderers had all the early pressure and were 2-up at h-t. Aided by questionable tactics (ignored by the ref), Walter missed an open goal but he scored along with James Miller for 2-2 (80 and 85). A winner was found (og) even later, but the Scottish Referee scribe was adamant the ball went over the bar and that Wanderers were robbed of a replay! Walter appeared in 16 matches in all competitions in his breakthrough season, but fell out of favour by the autumn of 1893. |
