Thomson [ii] |
Thomson (forename unknown) was probably born in Scotland, although his place and date of birth remain unknown to us. * The forward appeared as a guest for George Easton's Thistle in April, 1910. He made his debut appearance on Monday, 18th April, 1910, in a 1-1 draw at home to Celtic in a benefit match. He scored all 3 of his Thistle goals on Wednesday, 24th August, 1910, in a 4-1 win at home to Glasgow & District Police in a Benefit match! He played his third and last game for the club on Monday, 29th August, 1910, in a 2-1 defeat at home to Rangers, also in a Benefit match. His known club-list included only Partick Thistle. We don't know where or when Thomson died. *

We have this mystery centre-forward down as having played in three benefit matches, all within the space of 4 months in 1910. There may even be more, but there are gaps in some of our friendly line-ups from that period. His first known appearance was in Willie Howden's benefit match, a 1-1 Firhill draw with Celtic in April 1910. “Thomson, the centre-forward, who hails from the Garrison at Maryhill, showed a deal of aptitude for the position, especially in the second half” said the Daily Record. It should be noted that he was named "Brown" (in inverted commas) in the Glasgow Herald for that game, such was the way of it for trialist psuedonyms of the day. We rather think the Daily Record was using the right name, given the extra description. 1,000 were at Firhill on the evening of Wednesday, 24th August, 1910, a fundraiser for the Scottish Police FA being the order of the day. Thistle defeated their Glasgow & District Police opponents by 4 goals to 1 and it was centre-forward Thomson who grabbed the headlines with a fine hat-trick, as described in the Glasgow Herald: “Thomson opened the scoring from close quarters, the result of a pass from Lowrie. Before the interval the same player again scored, while shortly after second half had been started he scored a third.” Not unsurprisingly, Thomson was invited back for another benefit match the following Monday. Rangers (who won 2-1) were the opponents this time, as reported in the Herald: “At Firhill Park last evening fairly strong elevens representing these clubs met in a benefit match for Archibald McKenzie who has been with Partick Thistle for the last 5 seasons. There was a fair attendance. Play was of an even character until Lawrie, from a pass by Thomson, opened the scoring for Partick after less than 10 minutes play.” So there we have it, three goals and an assist in his three games was a fine return from Thomson. What became of this soldier-footballer we may never know, but he made his mark in a very short time! |
