These were very different days when ad-hoc arrangements were not entirely uncommon.
Ten-a-side games (or less!)

Sat-02-Sep-1882 [a] (?-?) D1-1 Renfrew FC (Friendly)
– Ten-a-side was deemed to be in order for this trip to Renfrewshire.
Sat-02-Dec-1882 [a] (?-?) W2-0 Johnstone (Friendly)
– This miserable game lasted for about an hour and, somewhat bizarrely, an eight-a-side affair was the order of the day.
Sat-17-Nov-1883 [h] (0-2) L1-3 Northern (Friendly)
– The ground was of the most wretched description owing to rain, rendering good play impossible. The teams were composed of ten men each, and the contest was limited to an hour’s play.
Sat-27-Mar-1886 [a] (4-0) W5-4 Port Glasgow Athletic (Friendly)
– The GH reported that both clubs played with ten men and it would seem like the forwards took advantage of the extra space in this nine goal thriller!
Sat-22-Jan-1887 [a] (0-1) L0-3 Cowlairs (Friendly)
– The scheduled 3pm kick-off time was delayed by 40 mins. Perhaps they were trying to round up a couple of extra players? If so, it seems they were unsuccesful as a ten-a-side match is implied by the GH line-ups, which further state both teams lined up in 2-2-5 formations.
Sat-02-Feb-1889 [a] (0-1) L0-1 Airdrieonians (Friendly)
– Thistle arrived with only ten-men, and the home side graciously reduced their own ranks by one to ensure an even contest. Bravo 'onians!
