Bio Extra

The son of Matthew Lamont (weaver, later stone mason) and Mary Ann Lamont (née Murphy). Robert had two older brothers (Joseph & Matthew), one older sister (Mary), all being born on the emerald isle. He would soon be joined by Scottish-born brothers James (in 1872), William (in 1876) and David (in 1878). In 1895-96, Robert and James would play together in the same Thistle team!

It's likely that Robert was introduced to Thistle by his brother as we were struggling after the sudden departure of inside left John Wilkie in November 1895. Speaking of his debut, the Scottish Referee (2/12/1895) reveals that Robert was the brother of James (although it gives him an intitial 'M' just to make it all even more difficult, we're certain that's just a reporter error as 'R. Lamont' is clear in many reports for a few weeks.) His brother James played alongside him in all 3 of his games, a disappointing 2-1 defeat at home to Motherwell, a horrific 7-0 defeat away to Leith Athletic followed by a 2-1 friendly defeat at home to Celtic 'A', during which Robert missed a penalty. It was a somewhat unusual incident as Celtic “A” were winning 2-1 late on when Thistle were awarded a disputed penalty. Celtic threatened to walk off but the award stood. The “Scottish Referee” reported that Robert sportingly aimed his kick at the corner flag. The age of the Corinthian spirit was not quite dead! It would turn out to be Robert's last act as he was never seen again in a Thistle jersey. In fact, his whole 'career' as a footballer is a bit of a mystery; we've no idea where he came from or where he went, but he was a well known figure in later 'real' life.

Robert married a lass from Milngavie, Jeanie Crockett Stobo, and William was their first born in 1899. A master builder, Robert had a hand in building much of his Milngave hometown and was a well respected figure in the area. He continued his work into his early 70s, but ill health finally forced him to retire. Robert passed away in his 80th year at 11, Glenside Crescent in Milngavie, when it was reported that he was predeceased by his wife Jeanie who passed away 5 years earlier. His funeral took place at Hillfoot Cemetery (these days known as New Kilpatrick Cemetery) on the 14th February 1951 in Bearsden, and he was survived by two sons and a daughter.
