Robert Hamilton

Robert Hamilton
A. Player

born in Scotland

Robert Hamilton was born on Sunday, 2nd March, 1890, in Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire.

The goalkeeper signed for George Easton's Thistle in September, 1911 (we think after a trial period), having most recently been with Lanemark.

Aged 20, he made his debut appearance on Wednesday, 4th January, 1911, in a 1-0 win at home to St Mirren in a Benefit match.

In doing so, Robert joined the goalies' clean-sheet debutant's club.

He registered his second and last clean-sheet on Saturday, 4th November, 1911, in a 1-0 win away to Kilmarnock in the SFL First Division.

He played his last game for the club on Saturday, 11th November, 1911, in a 2-2 draw at home to Heart of Midlothian in the SFL First Division, having appeared as a Jag on 9 occasions.

His club-list included Lanemark, Partick Thistle and Kilmarnock.

Robert died on Sunday, 2nd December, 1945, in New Cumnock, East Ayrshire, aged 55.

Historian's note: Although we have no contemporary supporting evidence, we have presumed the Robert Hamilton who signed in September 1911 to be one and the same as the Hamilton who played 5 games between January and May 1911, reasoning that having 2 or 3 different Hamiltons playing in goals in the same year seems unlikely. More likely is the scenario that the earlier games constituted a trial period. Contradicting our theory, the OH index lists N. Hamilton, R. Hamilton and Robert Hamilton. Perhaps the "N" is a typo? We haven't seen the "N" quoted in any paper. Another potential contradiction is the fact that the 01.05.1911 appearance came as a centre-forward not a goalkeeper! However, the player recognised as "Hamilton, Robert [3]" by JL is recognised as being a goalie AND a winger and, crucially, is connected to Lanemark before and after his time at Thistle. He went from Lanemark to his hometown team, Kilmarnock, in 1916-17, where he was back to playing as a winger. We therefore have no qualms about considering Robert Hamilton (the goalkeeper and forward) as one and the same player. If you have any evidence which supports or contradicts our guesswork then please do get in touch →
