Nicky Walker |
Joseph Nicol Walker was born on Saturday, 29th Septmeber 1962, in Aberdeen. The 6' 2 (12st 7lbs) goalkeeper signed for John Lambie's Thistle on Friday, 2nd December, 1994, having most recently been with Heart of Midlothian. Aged 32, he made his debut appearance on Saturday, 3rd December, 1994, in a 2-2 draw at home to Hibernian in the SFL Premier Division. Nicky kept his first clean-sheet on Saturday, 21st January, 1995, in a 0-0 draw at home to Celtic in the SFL Premier Division. He registered the last of his 13 clean-sheets on Tuesday, 23rd January, 1996, in a 2-0 win away to Raith Rovers in the SFL Premier Division. He played his last game for the club on Thursday, 16th May, 1996, in a 2-1 defeat (aet) away to Dundee United in a League play-off match, having appeared as a Jag on 64 occasions. Nicky's club-list included Elgin City, Leicester City, Motherwell, Rangers, Dunfermline Athletic, Heart of Midlothian, Burnley, Partick Thistle, Aberdeen, Ross County and Inverness Caledonian Thistle. |
Like Tommy Turner, Nicky Walker joined Thistle when all looked lost during the 94/95 season. A former Scotland internationalist he came to Firhill from Hearts with Craig Nelson going the other way. Walker soon won over the Thistle fans who were disappointed at Nelson's departure with a string of top quality performances in the Thistle goal. One in particular in the wet against Celtic was as good a goalkeeping display ever seen at Firhill. Although Thistle were relegated the next season Walker regained his spot in the Scotland squad and became the last Thistle player to be capped at full level by Scotland when he played against the USA prior to Euro 96. He was also part of the Scotland squad that participated in that tournament. He signed for Aberdeen just prior to the start of the 96/97 season but that move never really worked out and he went on to play for Highland rivals Ross County and Inverness Caley Thistle. |
