McKendrick |
McKendrick (forename unknown) was probably born in Scotland, although his place and date of birth remain unknown to us. * The defender was a guest or trialist for George Easton's Thistle in April, 1920. He made his only appearance on Thursday, 29th April, 1920, in a 4-4 draw at home to International Select in a Benefit match. There were no goals for McKendrick in his one-off game with Thistle. His known club-list included only Partick Thistle. We don't know where or when McKendrick died. *

This mystery right back turned out for Jimmy McMullan's benefit match at Firhill in April 1920 but, alas, there were no clues in any of the match reports as to his identity or where he came from. Thistle lined up against an "International Select" which was a false description, all opposition players being pooled from Partick Thistle (4 current Jags), Clyde, Celtic and Rangers. It was a decent occasion, 5,000 turning out on a perfect spring evening in Maryhill. On the pitch, it was a baptism of fire for McKendrick in some ways, with Willie Reid of Rangers grabbing a first-half hat-trick as the Select retired 3 to the good at the break. Future-Jag Jimmy McMenemy (of Celtic) put the Select 4-2 ahead in the second half, but Thistle always had good momentum and goals from Andrew Comrie (2), John Bowie and Alex Lauder earned an entertaining 4-4 draw in the end. £200 was raised for McMullan, but it was not the best result for McKendrick if he was trying to find a place at Firhill, although it's unclear whether he was playing as a guest or a trialist. |
