Both sides generally in playing order. Edinburgh City filled only 4 of their 9 allocated bench slots. Fixture brought forward from Saturday 12th due to the stadium being used for a sports event. The OPTA network offers no assist for Thistle's second goal, but it was a hard-worked dribble and pass by Logan Chalmers, duly credited on the Thistle Archive.

Six minutes into the new season Logan slotted in a Lawless pass then a cheeky backheel by Crawford doubled the lead (9). A long pass-back eluded the keeper for an og (23) then Fitzpatrick set up Chalmers to fire home the 4th (40). City scored with a header off a parried save (45+5). Off-side ruled out several Thistle "goals" - some dubious decisions.

Another excellent performance from BEN STANWAY who's going from strength to strength and is fast becoming a key asset to the team with his energy in the press, his accuracy and range in the pass and his willingness to venture box to box. A well earned rest after an hour at 4-1.

Partick Thistle kicked off their 2025/26 season with a 4-1 victory over Edinburgh City in the opening game of our Premier Sports Cup Group campaign. Goals from Cammy Logan, Robbie Crawford and Logan Chalmers along with an own goal from Robbie Mahon saw Thistle put the game out of sight before half time in the Group B clash. With recent signing Tony Watt on the bench, Logan Chalmers was deployed in a more forward role as Stevie Lawless and Aidan Fitzpatrick supported him on the wings while Paddy Reading and Cammy Logan both made their first competitive Jags starts.

It was an energetic start in scorching conditions as the opening moments saw Edinburgh City on the attack, with Dan O’Reilly forced into a block to keep the scoreline goalless. It would only take four minutes for Thistle to score the first goal of the 25/26 Scottish Football season. Stevie Lawless played the ball down the right, making space for debutant and former Edinburgh City player LOGAN who charged into the box and slotted past City goalkeeper Mark Weir to open his Thistle account 240 seconds into his competitive debut. Four minutes later, it was 2-0. ROBBIE CRAWFORD grabbed a rare goal in red and yellow after his lovely backheel beat the keeper to double Thistle’s advantage. The Jags showed no signs of letting up, continuing their relentless assault on the Edinburgh City goal. Aidan Fitzpatrick had the ball in the net on 21 minutes, but was ruled offside by what looked to be a wafer thin margin. The away side would soon grab their third, as a calamitous error saw City keeper Weir slip as he attempted to collect a knock back from ROBBIE MAHON. Chalmers raced in to try and grab a goal, but the ball rolled in before he could get anything on it for an own goal. It looked like the footballing gods were conspiring against Chalmers as he went on to have not one but two goals chalked off, falling foul of the offside flag on both occasions. Six minutes before the break, Chalmers finally got on the scoresheet as Mark Wilson’s side extended their lead further. A terrific through ball from Fitzpatrick found CHALMERS, whose low drive found the net to make it 4-0. City reduced the deficit in first half stoppage time as Jags keeper Lewis Budinauckas thrust a free kick from Jarvis into the air. Tiwi Daramola was the first to the ball, nodding it home to pull one back for City on the stroke of half time.

The opening five minutes of the second half saw the Jags try to grab a fifth, with Logan and then Chalmers (twice) coming close. As the weather started to cool down though, the tempo of the game slowed, with very little in the way of action for vast swathes of the half. Tony Watt came on for his debut in red and yellow, replacing Stevie Lawless for the final half hour. Watt flashed a shot wide before Youth Academy graduate Thomas Horn made his senior competitive debut, replacing Aidan Fitzpatrick on the 77th minute. On another day, Horn would have had a dream debut after Chalmers found him in from the right. Unfortunately for the youngster, a superb save from City keeper Weir denied him a goal in his first appearance and the game finished with no further goals. Thistle rise to first place in Group B ahead of the clash between Stranraer and Ross County at the Eco Gen Stadium at Stair Park. Stranraer will then make the trip to the Wyre Stadium at Firhill on Tuesday, facing Thistle in the second round of League Cup group games.

I thought the boys done really well, especially in the first 45 minutes when the sun was still blazing and it was really hot and obviously when you're playing on an astroturf pitch the heat reflects off that so we knew it was going to be tough. We asked the players to start with a high intensity; it's always easier to start that way rather than recoup it. A common theme this pre-season has been how well we've pressed as a team, put opponents under pressure, and I thought we got some of our best moments from pressing and playing forward. It was really good to see the spread of goalscorers within that, so pretty pleased overall.

● Thistle's 80th League Cup campaign gets underway. They've reached the final on 4 occasions, but haven't so much as reached a semi final since 1975.

● For the 3rd time in the last 7 years, it's a Partick Thistle player who is first to score in major competitive action in the new Scottish football season. Cammy Logan follows on from Harry Milne (2023) and Shea Gordon (2018).

● Fittingly, Steven Lawless, in his testimonial season, registers the first assist of the new campaign. Since our records began in 2012-13, his tally of 54 assists is massively ahead of any other player.

● All 3 of Robbie Crawford's goals have came in 3 different competitions. Hopefully the first league goal will follow soon!

● 31-year-old Tony Watt makes his Thistle debut.

● Thistle meet Edinburgh City for the second time in just under a year. Strangely, the 10 goals in the 'for' column have been scored by 10 different players.

● For the first time in history, Thistle win a match on the 11th July. To be fair, there's only been 3 previous attempts. Until this century, the date wasn't even on our playing calendar!
