A shot by Cardle (50) was followed by sloppy defending a minute later and 2-2 looked a possibility before Thistle settled and a well-worked free-kick found Saunders at the back post (74). Spittal knocked in a loose ball (81). Comfortable in the end but 4-1 was flattering.

Championship strugglers Partick Thistle moved comfortably into the last 16 of the Scottish Cup after seeing off Stranraer at Firhill. Gary Caldwell's side, who had won just one of 12 games since he took charge, led through Aidan Fitzpatrick's strike. And January signing Joe Cardle doubled the lead from James Penrice's cross. PJ Crossan hauled League One Stranraer back into it, but Steven Saunders and Blair Spittal added sheen to the scoreline with late strikes.

Any time you go into a cup game you just have to make sure you win and you're in the next round. We spoke about keeping up the tempo and that probably paid in the last 20 minutes when Stranraer tired. Now we focus on the league.

Stranraer manager Stevie Farrell (speaking to the BBC):

I didn't think it was a 4-1 scoreline, I thought it was sore on the lads. We did well to contain them first half. Over the piece I thought we competed well. If somebody said we'd come here and compete as well as we did I probably would have taken that.
