This time it took Queens 5 minutes to gain 2 corners but, again, Thistle took control yet couldn't find the net. Having seldom threatened, Queens almost took the lead just before half-time. A poor second half saw even fewer chances and 0-0 looked on until a poorly cleared free-kick led to the winner and quick revenge (89).

Queen of the South, after visiting Firhill on Boxing Day, we Thistle first foots of 2012 for a Scottish Cup meeting. Thistle were denied the services of the influential David Rowson who missed out with a back injury. There was no place either for new loan signings Darren Cole or Kal Naismith. Darren picked up an ankle injury following Friday’s training session while Kal was cup-tied having played for Cowdenbeath in an earlier round of the competition.

As they did in the Boxing Day league fixture, Queen of the South made a purposefully start to the game winning a couple of corners in the first five minutes. However, it was Thistle that soon took a grip on proceedings playing some nice football. Their first positive foray towards the Queens goal almost producing an 8th minute opening goal. Chris Erskine was able to collect Paul Cairney’s through ball and, after cutting inside from the right, shot wide of Lee Robinson’s left hand post. Tommy Stewart was next to fire in an effort towards the Queens goal, shooting over the bar from 20 yards out after turning sharply away from the Queens defence. Thistle were getting good width down both flanks. Chris Erskine and Stephen O’Donnell were both able to deliver balls over from the right but on neither occasion was anyone able to provide the touch that would produce a goal. On the left Aaron Sinclair sent over an excellent cross in the 18th minute and although Kris Doolan was able to stoop to reach the ball with his header there was no real power in his header and Robinson was able to save with some comfort. Doolan tried again in the 26th minute, trying to curl a shot from the right corner of the box after a Paul Cairney corner had reached him but he was unable to get sufficient curl on the ball to trouble the keeper. Nor was Paul Cairney with a free kick just a couple of yards outside the Queens box in the 32nd minute. Cairney could only blast the ball against the Queens wall and although he managed to get the ball back his low drive was heading away from goal, the flag going up for offside as Tommy Stewart tried to direct the ball back towards goal. Queens, that opening 5 minutes aside, had offered little up front but did come close to snatching a lead in the 36th minute. Kevin Holt was able to get the better of Paul Paton and his cross from the goal line on the left hand side posed the Thistle defence problems before Paul Cairney was able to step in and clear.

The first effort of the second half came from the visitors’ Nicky Clark who saw his speculative effort take a touch off a Thistle defender for a corner kick. As the cold really started to bite that Clark effort proved to be one of few effort on goal in a poor second half. Thistle too often taking the wrong option when in a promising position. Paul cairney, however, wasn’t too far away in the 83rd minute with a shot from the edge of the box after a lay off from Craig Dargo. A Palmerston replay was looking all but certain when Queens took an 89th minute lead. Carmichael had time to turn inside the box before shooting past Scott Fox.
